Key dates

Three dates that matter for rental.

12 September 2025

The Data Act applies.

Owners and renters of connected machines can ask for the data those machines generate.

12 September 2026

Access by design.

Connected products placed on the market from this date must let users reach their data easily.

12 January 2027

Switching becomes free.

Cloud and software providers can no longer charge you for moving to another provider.

The checklist

Thirteen checks in four parts.

Work through it with whoever owns your rental contracts and your telematics. Nothing you tick leaves this page.

1Know your connected fleet

You can't answer a data request for a machine you didn't know was connected.

2Your rights towards manufacturers

As the owner of a connected machine, you are a user under the Data Act.

3Your rental contracts

A customer who rents a connected machine is a user too, for the rental period.

4Contracts and software vendors

The Data Act also covers the terms you sign and the software you run.

Questions

The Data Act for rental companies.

Does the EU Data Act apply to equipment rental companies?

Yes, when you own or rent out connected machines. You are a user towards the manufacturer, and your customers are users of the machines they rent. Before a rental contract, you tell the renter what data the machine generates.

Who owns the data from a rented machine?

The Data Act doesn't hand out ownership. It gives users the right to access the data and share it with a service they choose. Both the owner and the renter can be users, so agree in the rental contract who may use the data.

What changed on 12 September 2026?

Connected products placed on the EU market from that date must be designed so that users can reach their data easily, and where relevant directly. Machines bought earlier are still covered by the access rights that apply since September 2025.

Is this checklist legal advice?

No. It is a practical summary for rental companies. Check your contracts with your lawyer or your trade association, such as the European Rental Association, which publishes its own guide.

Where does Hirro keep tracking data?

On AWS in the EU. A standard DPA is available, and you can export your asset data through the API or an export.

Book a demo

Track your fleet with data you can take with you.

In the demo we show where your data lives, how you export it, and how the phones report only what you allow.

Or leave your work email and we plan it with you.

We use your email only to plan the demo.

Thanks. We'll email you within one working day to plan the demo.
